How does this statement strike you?
“What Matters to You, Matters”
It's true you know. Sometimes we forget this, or never even knew it was true. You'll have trouble with this if:
- You grew up worrying about how to please others
- You learned to decide things based solely upon doing the “right thing”
- You lost touch with your own thoughts and feelings.
- You aren't used to considering yourself in your plans
- You are currently caring for one or more people whose needs are so big that it seems inconceivable to think about what matters to you
- You aren't used to having others put what matters to you first
These are all valid reasons to struggle with you valuing your own thoughts, feelings, needs, and desires.
However…this doesn't change the truth…
“What Matters to You, Matters”
Whether you can take action on what matters to you or not… talk to yourself in a kind way about this. Tell yourself,
“What matters to me does matter. I may not be used to listening to my heart and what it's whispering to me…but it's not too late to learn. I can start to tune in to my thoughts, feelings, needs, and desires without pressure of having to take action. I can write down what I'm learning I like and don't like, what calms me and gives me life, what I need to recharge, and what drains me.”
Don't wait around for someone else to give you permission to listen to and value what your heart is saying. God has put a voice inside you for you to listen to. It's fine to listen to the needs of others in your life, just make sure you are one of those you're looking out for too!
Hope this helps,
Kim

Hint for Mother's Day:
Mother's Day is just a few days away. I've got a hint that may help in making Mother's Day go well this year.
Mother's Day is loaded…often filled with unmet expectations and disappointments. If you are a Mom, I encourage you to “SPELL OUT CLEARLY” what you would like to happen that would make this an enjoyable and meaningful day for you. When we hint at what we need, or even worse don't share clearly what we need, we will be disappointed, and those who want to honor us will feel like failures.
Consider a different option for this Mother's Day. Let your family know what you'd like: Be specific…here's some ideas: Dinner out, Dinner at home, Breakfast in bed, a gift, a nice card with kind words, a picture drawn by a small child, etc. Let your family know, “Mother's Day is coming up and I'd like it to be a special day for all of us. I'd like to have lunch at home. Buying take out and bringing it home is fine. I'd also like a gift from each of you and a card telling me the ways you appreciate me. This would make my Mother's day wonderful. I'd like lots of hugs and kisses too.”
Notice how clear this is. This type of direct approach will help your family honor you in a way that is meaningful to you, and will help them be successful. Otherwise they will miss doing what you need and they will feel awful and confused about why their attempts to celebrate Mother's Day was a disaster.
Try honoring yourself and advocating for yourself this year.
If you are a Husband or Child, ask the Mom in your life what you could do to make this day special for her…and do it for her!
Hope this helps…I'd love to get your comments, so please leave them below!
