blog-background

Jes' blog background features her sassy self, her sassy dog, & her sassy parties! Stolen directly from her blog (beware: more sassy pics await you there!)

If you follow me on Twitter, you might have seen me tweeting about the awesomeness that is Happier Hours, which is a mothly amazeballs event hosted by my friend Aidan Donnelley Rowley to add something more to the booze when 5p rolls around – great conversation! Each month she picks a new topic & brings in a speaker to talk about it, starting with Gretchen Rubin on happiness (I know. I fell over, too). This past month, she put herself in the spotlight to talk about her new book, Life After Yes (just just finished it, & it's gorgeous) along with her friend/wedding planner Jes Gordon, who recently wrote Party Like a Rockstar. While I didn't know Jes before her name appeared as a Happier Hours speaker, the name of her book & her company definitely sparked my interest! And when I met her in person, I loved loved loved her unique Jes-ness, unafraid to simply tell it like it is with a smile & a laugh. When she described her path from aspiring rock star to big-time party planner, I knew I had to trick/force her into being in the next Grown-Up Gigs spotlight. Thankfully it didn't take much cajoling!

1. What did you want to be when you grew up? Well, it kept changing. First, I wanted to be a Vet, then after interning with one and putting a perfectly healthy dog down due to inconvenience I knew that wasnt for me… I was always a musician of sorts. I majored in soundtrack for film in college and played in a lot of bands so I would have to say ideally I wanted to be a rock star.

2. You mentioned at Happier Hours that you tried college 2 or 3 times as a music major (hence the Rock Star moniker), & ended up packing it in your last semester, never to return. What kept you going back to school, & what was the breaking point where you knew you were leaving for good? I kept going back to school simply because that was what all my friends were doing. Also I was getting a lot of free marijuana and I had awesome friends! ha!  I had been working the entire time during all of these “attempts” and I was in my last semester finally taking the dreaded music theory class that I had been trying to avoid my entire college career. The professor was a pompous ass and kept coming to me with intricate questions I think she knew I couldn't answer. Basically she was just in my grill and I walked out of the class, called my Mom from a pay phone and told her i was walking and going into business full time. She gave me her blessing.

3. How did you discover that event planning was your grown-up career, & how did you make it happen? Well I kind of made event production a way of life and what identifies me as an artist and as a business owner.  I was a florist for years (Michelle's note: Jes revealed at Happier Hours that she was a florist at 13!!!)… over the years i explored and experienced full aesthetic and environmental design through designing movie sets and raw spaces and I finally realized that I could take the small seed of floral design and turn it into a full 5 sensorial experience that others could enjoy through celebration and lifestyle. I don't really know how I made it happen, but I knew it was all I could do consistently and well so I figured I better put everything I knew and owned into it: I still do, so I suppose I am still growing up… :)

4. I loved how, at Happier Hours, you mentioned that you create one-of-a-kind events by finding the “flaws” of the hosts & turning them into positives. In this way, you're able to create a unique stamp on things based on that quirk. I talk a lot about finding your uniquity (yes, that's a made-up word, which is a weird quirk of mine that I've recently embraced), & love that the uniquity of your client is the foundation for each of your events. How are you able to discover what that uniquity is for each client? I can sometimes call out something unique about an individual within moments of meeting them, other times I need to really get to know a client before discovering what they are all about… Often we look at what folks are wearing or what their jobs are and we don't know a thing… I often ask to see a client's home or personal space and ask them what one of their favorite things are inside their homes so i can understand what is dear to them and use it as a tool to express something in their events. I also like to ask clients: ” If you weren't a lawyer or whatever profession you do, what would you rather be?” This is an amazing question because often what they'd really like to be doing is a complete 360 from what they are actually doing on a daily basis. I had one client that was a doctor, but she said she'd always wanted to be a professional skater so we rocked out a party for her at a local ice skating rink. None of her guests expected it and had a blast uncovering a side of her they didn't know about!

5. If you had to give your pre-Party Like a Rock Star self one piece of advice from Rock Star Jes, what would you say? I would say, go ahead and make mistakes, but just don't make the same ones twice!   Also go with your gut and stop second guessing yourself!!

Thanks Jes for an amazeballs interview! I think the “What would you be doing if you weren't doing what you're doing?” belongs in Tough (Question) Tuesday for sure! You can learn more about Jes on her website & through her book, or connect with her on her blog, Facebook, & twitter.

Success Watercolor by Stephanie Corfee

In answer to the above question: You (that's who)!

I loved loved loved the conversation about passion that sparked from last week's Tough (Question) Tuesday, & it made my mind wander over from the word “passion” (whether or not you believe in it, what it consists of, if it's a loaded word, what it means to you personally) over to the word “success”, & just hafta ask:

What's your definition of success?

I'll join ya over in the comments section with my own answer. This is gonna be good!

I realized last week that this past Saturday, the 19th, marked 3 whole months as a Woman of the World / full-time creative career coach / jailbird from Corporate America. I can hardly freakin' believe it (I think May went by in about a day & a half), but it's true. Here's a summation of what's been rockin' & what's been less rockin' since then:

Hello my lovely readers!

I have a small and painless request (I think!). Y'see, I started advertising on blogs like a real live grown-up woman of the world/business owner, & while I love the sites where my badge blinks brightly (currently, at Kind Over Matter, Kelly Rae Roberts & The Bright Side Project), I'd love to find, well, more peeps like you! While I think I kinda sorta know what your go-to blogs/magazines are, I know what happens when you assume…..so I figured I'd ask!

If you can kindly let me know in the comments what your go-to, can't-miss blogs and/or mags are and whether you read ‘em by visiting or by subscription (whether via email or RSS), I would supercalifragiouslisticexpealidosciously thank you.

I really appreciate the help!

The panelists! Meredith, Amy, me, Rebecca (moderator & Blog Out Loud co-creator), Megan (co-creator of Blog Out Loud), Alison & Erin. I think we might be the best looking panel in the history of ever.

Monday night was Blog Out Loud 6 (finally!), & to say I was superly duperly psyched would be a superly duperly understatement. I had a private session and a group coaching session scheduled, but I cleared the rest of my day to get ready (a combination of getting into the “right” frame of mind & straightening the hell out of my hair) & just enjoy everything leading up to what I knew was gonna be a wonderful night. This was as close to performing as I've gotten being a coach, & I couldn't wait to get in front of an audience & have my “castmates” be a panel of really highly respected, awesometastic bloggers. I knew this was my jam.

I was cool as a cucumber until, oh, 5:30p or so, when I got on the subway & made my way to tonefarmer 75 minutes before I had to be there. Of course, the usually long-ish wait for the G train took mere seconds, & I got out of the subway 40 minutes before Rebecca & Megan asked the panelists to arrive. I decided to head over to tonefarmer anyways, figuring that my two hands might be of use for setting up, stuffing goody bags, etc. ( I ain't above some manual labor – yet!). I ignored the butterflies in my stomach and made my way to 25th Street.

35863_399737008805_54904663805_4347197_2649633_n

Rebecca's the one who asked me to be on the panel! I tricked her super good.

My nerves immediately melted away when I walked into the beautiful space, met / hugged / squealed with Rebecca & Megan, & welcomed my friend Jen with her Fanny & Jane goodies (holy drooltime). Although Rebecca & Megan didn't need my two hands for anything other than drinking wine, I managed to put out some Fanny & Jane treats while only eating one of them. For now.

Fanny & Jane Red Velvet Cake Bites are, simply, love. I contained myself to 3 of ‘em. And 1 salted peanut butter buckeye. And 1 Nutty Graham Bar Bites. And 2 Mini Choco Buttercream Sammies. But that was my dinner. Yeah. That sounds good. It was my dinner. Another photo by Blog Out Loud.

One by one, I met the rest of the warm, good-looking, amazeballs panel. Everyone was so friendly & sweet that I knew I was in good company.

Yup. Blog Out Loud 6 was gonna rock my socks.

The crowd, and me getting to my seat on the panel a bit late. Thank God I'm cute! Photo by Blog Out Loud.

Before I knew it, it was time for the panel to take their seats & for the panel-ing to start. Megan & Rebecca gave everyone a super warm welcome, & then it was time for the panel to introduce themselves – starting with me! Thankfully I had mentally rehearsed my elevator speech (which is really an elevator sentence or two: “My name's Michelle Ward & I'm the When I Grow Up Coach. I help creative people devise the career they think they can't have, or discover it to begin with.” In this instance, I added, “Blah blah certified life coach blah blah NYU blah blah whenigrowupcoach.com/blog” with the “blah blah blahs” replaced with brilliant, sparkling, genius-ish words) & didn't have time to get flustered. And thankfully, my new BlogHer friend Patty (of the Inadvertantly Doing Something Scary post) was in the front, & every time I'd look her way she's smile at me. That gave me the warm & fuzzies. (Thanks, Patty)

The hour just flew by as we all gave our takes on the rewards of blogging, time management, monetizing your blog, twitter, authenticity, the line between personal & professional when it comes to blogging, using the word “amazeballs” in public (& often!)…I can go on & on! Generally, I just loved the diversity of the panel as a mix of bloggers bloggin' for themselves/their business & those blogging under larger corporate umbrellas (Alison blogs for Etsy & Meredith blogs for Ebay). So, so interesting to hear about the difference. Also, the whole vibe of the evening was very down-to-earth, inspiring, intimate & laid-back but with a really fun, high-energy, uh, energy.

It was absolutely reinforced to me last night that the blogging community is one that is a positive, supportive neighborhood. We're here to share our wins/lessons/challenges, make connections, build relationships & find the like-minded people who live on the other side of town and on the other side of the world. It really is all about claiming your uniquity & not being afraid to put that out into the universe. I love how all the panelists encouraged the bloggers/budding bloggers to create their own space that reflects their own vision, everyone who doesn't agree be damned!

35863_399736998805_54904663805_4347195_299844_n

No, I didn't start drinking 'til after the panel ended! Unless you count the glass of wine beforehand…

35863_399739308805_54904663805_4347217_7570371_n

My BlogHer/Twitter friends! Patty, Tara & Ashley. Thanks for coming out, ladies!

I got nothing but awesometastic feedback from those who I knew that went last night, whether they're new bloggers or seasoned ones. And the twitter accolades have me smiling all day! Thanks again to the Blog Out Loud ladies for asking me to join this esteemed (yes, esteemed!) panel, for the incredible panelists for being so smart & friendly & good looking, to everyone who came out & everyone who sent me encouragements along the way!

In summation: I can't quite believe that that this is my life.

Passion Fine Art Print by Lovely Journey

Lately, a fairly large chunk of my clients, when asked what they're passionate about, have remarked along the lines of, “There's nothing I like doing so much I want to commit to it, and therefore I'm not passionate about anything.” I've so far replaced this word with two clients – one now uses “like-like” & the other uses “abundance” – to take away it's weight, it's heft, it's seriousness. I've even gotten a few, “I don't think there's such a thing.” As someone who's living my passion after living another passion, & who took great pains in finding a new passion when the old one – while still a great love of my life – faded, I've been fairly taken aback by these responses.

So I have to ask:

Do you believe in passion?

And some follow-up questions:

If not, why?

Is it something you believe in, but feel is a super loaded, scary word?

If you do believe in it, are there conditions?

What does “passion” mean to you?

Answer this tough question & any/all/some/most/none of the follow-ups in the comments section, & I'll meet ya there. If you can't tell, I'm super curious about this, so I'm super looking forward to your thoughts & insights!

Get Over It by Restless Type

Happy Friday, lovelies! I have to have to have to point you back in the direction of Spring because, as the title of the post suggests, we've done a big fat revamping. Not only did we post the very first video with our very new co-host Tiffany Moore (she's so cute & funny & smart & engaging!), but we redesigned the site, too (”we” being “the lovely & talented Jess Swift”). We have big, fat, grandiose plans for Spring – like starting a video channel, having more contributors, taking over for Oprah (y'know, little things) – but, well, we're not exactly sure when they're gonna roll out & how it's all gonna happen. It's kinda scary & pretty exciting at the same time, so you know I'm happy (I love living in that scary/exciting place!). So please please (with sugar on top) head on over to Spring & watch our videos & comment everywhere & add us to your RSS feed /get our newsletter or email updates & help us take over the world spark some awesome conversation. Our June videos are all gonna be about the Law of Attraction, & both the videos & the comments that are already happening are super stimulating (hehe, I said “super”).

Speaking of scary/exciting, I hafta tell you briefly about the scary/exciting thing I did on Wednesday night: I attendended a networking event ALONE! Now, you might be saying to yourself, “Michelle, you can have a conversation with a wall, what are you talking about?” in which I'd reply, “But I'd only talk to that wall if someone I knew was in the vicinity!” Seriously, I don't go anywhere alone – not to restaurants, not to the movies, not anywhere (OK, subways & sidewalks & parks & food stores & coffee shops to work don't count – I go there alone all the time, you know what I mean). And even though I know I can talk to a wall, & I don't have a problem meeting new people & – heck, I'll say it – they usually find me pretty fun/nice/engaging, I don't trust it enough to have the strength to walk in the door by myself. So, when my friend who was accompanying me to the BlogHer Meet-up left me a voicemail that she had to go home sick (hope you're feeling better, Kylie!), I listened to the message on the platform of the 6 train, 1 stop from where I needed to go, & panicked. I was tired. I looked great. I spent an hour getting there. It would take an hour getting back. I was scared. What was I scared of? I finally told the Vampires to leave me the hell alone, as I spent enough time looking good (I ironed, for Pete's sake!) & getting there that I couldn't just turn around when I was 1 short stop away. Also, I know logically that I can talk to a wall. My Vampire didn't have a comeback for that one. So, I transfered to the local train, got off at 28th Street, & walked into the restaurant. Because I was a few minutes early, I was told to wait at the bar until the downstairs space opened up. I went about my “busy business”, checking my iPhone to see if any emails came in in the last, oh, 4 minutes, & I was greeted by a warm smile by a woman – alone – at the next table.

“Are you here for BlogHer?”, she said.

“Yes,” I responded, relieved. “Are you?”

“Yes,” she said. We both laughed.

“We must have The Look!” I said. “I was going to ask you the same thing.”

Her name was Patty, & we hit it off right away. By the time we made our way downstairs, we were chatting up a storm, & Patty even told her Mom – who was worried about her going to an event “alone” – that she met “a nice Jewish girl from Long Island” (my words) & she was doing fine. Patty & I got a drink & some nibbles, & sat down in a large booth where Tracy was already situated (alone, too!). Throughout the evening, we were joined by brave BlogHer's who approached us – sometimes alone, sometimes with a friend or two – to ask if they can join us in our big booth. Blog names & twitter handles & business cards were exchanged, & for 2+ hours, I met a wonderful array of interesting women & – of course – found a whole new slew of friendly faces to speak to at BlogHer this August (which I thought I'd have to go to, gulp, alone).

So a big hello to Patty, Tracy, Ashley, Rachel, Li, Kath & Molly for making a scary event into nothing but fun & awesomeness. See you ladies at BlogHer!

Delivering Happiness

“I thought about how easily we are all brainwashed by our society and culture to stop thinking and just assume by default that more money equals more success and more happiness, when ultimately happiness is really just about enjoying life.” -Tony Hsieh, Delivering Happiness

Yay hooray – it's a new Rousing Review! This month I'm reviewing Delivering Happiness, the new book by Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh. I know it's a bit of a deviation from my usual creative career books, but I was interested in it because (a) I've always been intrigued by the stories I heard about Zappos, from offering their trainees $2000 to quit to sending a client flowers when they heard that her mother passed away(b) I was sent an advance copy of the book with the promise that I'd review it on my blog. But, the former is what lead to the latter, & I'm so glad to have gotten my hands on a kick-ass book that might've taken me some time to pick up otherwise.

Delivering Happiness is, essentially, Tony Hsieh's autobiography, despite his young age. I'll admit, it was tough to get through the first half of the book without really wanting to hate the guy, who sold his first business, LinkExchange, to Microsoft for $265 million before his late 20s. But I liked him in spite of myself, as he's a self-made guy who has built his success around creating a life he loves. He walks the walk, talks the talk & even ate $40 million, which Microsoft offered him to stick around for a year as an advisor. At first, he took it (he ain't no idiot), but when it led to multiple weeks of waking up late, heading to the office, checking/sending emails, & going home, he walked. Tony writes:

“I didn't know exactly what I was going to do, but I knew what I wasn't going to do. I wasn't going to sit around letting my life and the world pass me by. People thought I was crazy for giving up all that money. And yes, that decision was scary, but in a good way…I had decided to stop chasing the money, and start chasing the passion.”

The middle part of the book is all about the founding of Zappos – the highs, the lows, the smart decisions, the big mistakes – but it wasn't until they asked themselves the question, “What do we want to be when we grow up?” (yes, really – it's on page 120) that they realized that customer service was the key to not only to the successful growth of Zappos, but to the happiness of Tony & his partners. Once they decided to actually make the changes to offer “the very best customer service” (instead of just talking about it), that's when the magic happened: hiring employees not only for their skills & experience but their weirdness (if your head didn't fit in the door, you weren't hired – despite the money or intelligence that Big Head could bring into the company); making Customer Service be the entire company instead of a department within the company (every new hire goes through training & mans the phones, despite their title or position); not giving their call center reps scripts, but allowing them to use their own skills & personality (& weirdness!) to respond to customers. I can go on & on, but (a) I think you get my drift & (b) I don't wanna ruin the really great stories for ya!

The last third of the book really, truly, awesomely hit home for me. In going into how Zappos became not only a ridiculously successful company, but did it by claiming & staying true to their uniquity (yes, Amazon recently bought ‘em for billions, but they're unallowed to touch Zappos' “weirdness”) & out-of-the-book thinking, it made me think that Corporate America doesn't have to be evil – it just doesn't know any better. Hopefully, with more people like Tony at the helm, the Zappos mindset & culture will become The Rule as opposed to The Exception.

Here are some kick-ass questions, exercises & ideas that Tony used in his own life, both personally & professionally, that I just couldn't not include here:

  • Make a list of the happiest periods of your life, & find the connecting threads. For Tony, it meant “building stuff and being creative and inventive(…)connecting with a friend(…)” Once you find the connections, figure out where/how you can go do it. Where's the opportunity for you to live your happiness?
  • Ask yourself: What is success? What is happiness? What am I working towards? Make sure that the answer to the last question supports the answers you gave for the first two.
  • What is the 1% improvement you can make today? If you make a 1% change each day, that's a 37% improvement by the end of the year.
  • A nice chunk of the book is all about Core Values – how Zappos found theirs, the questions that surrounded them (seriously, I can take all those questions & have a Tough (Question) Tuesday every day for a year), & the importance of ‘em. To find your own/your business', bookmark  The Delivering Happiness Core Values page & put aside time to go through it. Uh, there's nothing there yet, but since they list this page as a resource in the book, I assume (hope!) it'll be live soon.

In summation (I love saying that), Delivering Happiness not only allows you to see that you can use your happiness to create an extremely successful business (& not screw anyone along the way), but it will make you think about what you wanna do in your own life / biz to deliver happiness in your own way. By the time I was finished, my head was swimming with awesomeness & I ran to book a brainstorming session with Tara Gentile to sort it all out. I'll also be joining the Delivering Happiness movement, which I know will end up being the foundation to not just my business, but my personal life as well. In summation summation, this is really, really good stuff.

To celebrate my 2nd blogiversary super big time, I hosted a ridiculously big giveaway every single day last week, featuring at least 2 sponsors / day. Here's a recap of each giveaway:

Great Giveaway 1: a print from Effervescence Photography, a custom scrapbook from Tara Sroka Designs & a natural cosmetics set from Paynted Ladies.

Now just click on each link, scroll down to the bottom, & answer the question I ask ya in the comments to be entered to win. You can only enter once per Great Giveaway, but you can win more than one Great Giveaway package.  Everyone will be jealous of you, but you so won't care.

Make sure to come back tomorrow to find out if you won(s) (yes, “wons” is when you win more than one thing at a time. Look it up. But don't, because it won't be there, because I made it up). Oh, & if ya came by looking for Tough (Question) Tuesday, there are 5 tough questions associated with each Great Giveaway, so click away & get 5 times the toughness with 5 times the awesome prizes as usual.
